Read moreVintage King interviews Gloria Kaba and David Tolomei
David Tolomei was recently interviewed by Vintage King for his work on Protomartyr’s latest, Ultimate Success Today. Tolomei gave a gear rundown and spoke of the recording process for the acclaimed album. I love the record. The band’s vision to have all of these unique instruments and textures left a lot of room to explore new territory. There are moments where there are six flutes weaving in and out, parts with multiple cellos, bass clarinet, all kinds of things like that. To me, those sounds became a theme, and they sit well with the writing. I really like that about the record, and I have to credit the band with that. They came to the table with that, and I’m happy with the way it all came together.

Vintage King also chatted with Gloria Kaba about her experience as a producer and creator in the industry. The interview highlights some of her tips, tricks, favorite moments, and, of course, her favorite food spots:
My mantra is, “Anything goes.” There are no rules when we’re creating. Let’s try everything and be as weird as possible. Let’s throw everything at the wall and see what sticks. Sometimes I’ve done some really weird stuff that didn’t work. We loved it the night before, but the next morning when you come in and listen, you’re like, “Yeah, that’s not it.” But, the beauty of it is that it can inspire something else. Maybe we go in a different direction or pull back and not be as weird. But I’m all about trying everything. Anything goes.

Soccer Mommy - ‘Color Theory’ album of the week on Stereogum. Produced by Gabe Wax
Soccer Mommy’s latest album Color Theory was named Album of the Week by Stereogum, and given high praise. Gabe Wax not only produced the album, but provided various backing vocals and instruments, in addition to engineering the critically acclaimed record.
Stereogum says:
color theory is a closed loop that answers every depressing question with an equally depressing answer. No matter what hallway Allison travels down, she’s met with the same struggle. It’s a heavy album, one that evokes the helplessness that comes with depression, but there is light peeking out even from its darkest corners. “I want someone who is following a dream/ Someone like me,” she yearns on “night swimming,” her monochromatic shades offering a potential escape. These songs seem like a part of that escape, a way to excavate personal demons and provide a way to keep going in spite of it all.
